Irony

Irony

Irony is the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect. Irony is a part of my life in many ways. For example, I got sick on my 18th birthday. I couldn't do anything I planned for the weekend. Irony is every where. For example, you just ate but you still check the fridge for food and don't get anything and go back to whatever you were doing. Its a part of life because a lot of things happen that are not suppose but they do anyways. Another example of irony is being hit by an ambulance. The irony in that is that the ambulance comes when people are in danger and being hit by one is like causing danger to the person being hit by it.

In the poem Richard Cory by Edwin Arlignton Robinson there is a lot of irony. For example, the main character Richard was a gentlemen, rich and had an education. Everyone in town always believe he had the perfect life. Having money was all you needed to live. But to Richard it wasn't the money. He shot himself dead. No one knows why either. But the irony in this poem is that money doesn't make us happy no matter how much we have. Money makes us happy a short period of time but not forever. There are other things besides money that Richard appreciated. The moral of this poem is to show people that is there are other things that can make us happy, your priorities must be more than just objects.

In the short story "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant describes irony in a different way. It showed us readers that just because someone is rich or has a lot of money doesn't mean everything they own is real. Wearing imitations is one way the look fancy. This story shows a different example of irony. The main character Mathilde was a very beautiful woman. But she was born very poor. She hated that she didn't have fancy dresses or shoes. She always imagined herself has a rich woman. Her husband got her an invitation to a ball but instead of being happy she was very upset because the women who were going to be there we all rich and had fancy outfits. Her husband bought her a dress and shoes to go to the ball. But that wasn't enough for her. She needed jewelry to match. But she does not own any. Her husband suggested her to borrow from one of her rich friends. Once she had the necklace she got ready and left to the ball. Hours later when she arrived home, she notice the necklace wasn't on her. Her and her husband searched everywhere for the black diamond necklace. It was no where to be found. She decided to go to a Jewelry store and buy one very much alike. It was a fortune, she couldn't afford one bit of it. She bought it anyways and return it to her friend. She and her husband spent almost 10 years paying the necklace back. After those 10 years she runs into her friend. She had told her what happened and so what happen was that the necklace she borrowed was actually a imitation of the real one. All this time Mathilde was paying off a real diamond necklace when the one she bought was worth nothing compare to the real one. This is a lesson learned for her because she shouldn't complain about what she has or was born into. She should have appreciate what she has or things wont ever be good for you.

In the article "The House that Slaves Built" by By Gardiner Harris shows irony that goes back 200 years back. The President's House known as the White House was built by African American slaves when Thomas Jefferson moved in. It's ironic now in the present for the simple reason that Barack Obama, our African American president moved in with his family to the white house that was built buy slaves in the past. It's a powerful symbols of change to all Americans of all races. "The racial history of the White House is a wonderful symbol of the racial history of the nation as a whole," says John Stauffer. I agree with this quote because it does affect the nation as a whole in ways that provide good change to everyone in it.

In this political cartoon it shows different natural and terrorists attacks in US and around the world. The purpose of the cartoons' sarcasm is to describe what people are doing to help which absolutely nothing. This is very ironic because for Hurricane Katrina there weren't no type of help towards the disaster. Also with the over pollution. People know how not to pollute the air and no one stop. Not even after seeing whats happening to the world around them. No one seems to care about whats going on in the world. The same with the other one mentioned in the cartoon as well.

Irony is very important because it provides information that can get someone out of thinking the way they do. It shows the reader a lesson and how things would go wrong. A lot of kids television show have irony in their episodes. To teach kids lesson before they go through it. Its a part of a learning exercise. Irony is the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning. The current situation in Japan is very much of an irony because the first time people saw Japan at a very bad position was during WW2 when American soldier were told to throw the first atomic bomb in the town of Hiroshima. Again, another atomic bomb was dropped in Nagasaki killing a lot of people. Now, 66 years later an earthquake and a killer Tsunami strikes in Japan destroying everything in is path. The Tsunami left Japan in horrifying conditions. Also stimulating the nuclear plant to spread out into the atmosphere putting people across the globe on their toes. Fukushima is looking like the next Hiroshima after many years Japan doesn't want another nuclear bomb to destroy everything once again.
